The puppy finally stopped, barking quite loudly, which made you irritated. You sighed and looked up to where the dog had lead you. There was a young boy with shaggy blonde hair and an ahoge sticking up. He was huddled against the alleyway's wall, trying to keep warm. Your eyes widened a bit. "H-hello" you greeted, kneeling down to meet his gaze. The boy backed up a bit, averting his eyes away. "Hi" he mumbled shyly. "What's your name?" You ask gently, smiling. The boy looked up with dull eyes, and sighed. "Alfred. What's yours, miss?" he asked back, raising an eyebrow. Usually, no one payed attention to him. If an adult spotted him in the alleyway, they would simply pass by. Why were you taking the time to acknowledge him? "Just call me ___, none of this 'miss' business. Is this your doggy? he lead me over here. Don't tell me you're alone, are you?" you asked. "He's my best friend. I was kicked from home because...they didn't want me. They were going to send me to an orphanage" Alfred explained. Tears spilled from his eyes and he covered his face between his hands. Seeing this boy cry made you die a little inside. The puppy whimpered, licking Alfred's cheek comfortingly. You gently removed his hands away from his tear-stained face and smiled. "You can stay with me, how about that, Alfred?" you asked. The boy shook his head. "You're going to g-get rid of me like they did! You're going to abandon me and my friend!" he cried out. You didn't flinch or move away, instead, you pulled him in for a hug. "I would never. Both of you can stay with me for as long as you want" you whispered, rocking him back and forth in the embrace. Alfred's eyes lit up suddenly and buried his face into your neck. "Okay" he whispered back. His eyes slowly closed and he drifted off into sleep.
"Poor kid must be exhausted" you mumbled to yourself, taking your umbrella in one hand and carrying Alfred in the other.
~Later that night~
"Thanks" Alfred said, scarfing down the hamburger on his plate. You had suggested to order chinese carry out, but Alfred kept insisting on burgers. He licked his lips and gave a toothy grin. "This is the best!" he shouted in happiness, fist pumping the air. You chuckled, taking a bite of your hamburger. "You know, Alfred, if all you want is fast food, that could help my budget" you joked, but Alfred only grinned at the idea. "Chester likes his dinner too!" he said, pointing to the puppy who gobbled down the dog food. You simply smiled in reply, deep in thought. Alfred's true personality had shown quickly. He was suddenly much more happier and brighter. It made you feel that you had a son. Right when you were having that thought, Alfred's voice snapped you out of it. "Hey, ___...Is it okay if I call you mom?" he asked hesitantly. He looked unsure and nervous. "Of course you can, Al" you said, grinning now. His smile got wider and he laughed. "Really? That's cool! I have a mom!" he said, staring at you with his beautiful blue eyes.
~Timeskip to a year and a half later~
"Mom!" Alfred called out. He ran as quickly as his legs could take him, slamming open your room door. "What is it Al?" you asked, wide eyed in surprise. "It's Chester". You both rushed downstairs to see Chester, who barked a bit softly in your presence. You slowly walked up, mouth opening a bit in surprise. There, curled up against the dog, were 4 puppies. "I don't think Chester's a boy".
